Our Lawyers

I studied history, languages and philosophy in school. I was very interested in the roles justice, law, liberties, and freedom played in society. I later decided that I wanted to be a lawyer in a legal system that offered the promise of establishing justice and fairness for those who were most in need. The best part of my 25 years of practicing law has been focusing my efforts to help those whom I think have some of the greatest needs: workers injured on the job.

I put on my law school application that I wanted to represent Iowa labor unions and their members. I feel as strongly about that today as I did 14 years ago but have added representing injured Iowans, victims of wage theft and wrongful termination to my practice. I am only a lawyer because it allows me to go to work every day to represent people who genuinely need help.

Ever since I was young, I have found myself gripped by stories told by family, friends, and others about times they were treated unfairly. Hearing these stories always created a strong desire in me to get involved and join the storyteller in his or her battle to make things better. It is this desire that inspired me to go to law school. I receive my greatest satisfaction as a lawyer when I go to work and use my skills to push back against the unfair situations, large and small, people face every day.

My oldest brother was born with profound disabilities. He could not speak. When problems arose during his life, someone needed to speak for him. This left a profound impression on me. I became a lawyer so that I could speak for those who need someone to speak for them. For the past 25 years, I have had the good fortune to assist many wonderful people who were injured at work or due to another person or company’s negligence or neglect. When I was a young man, I lived through the turmoil and strain that careless and neglectful behavior can cause. I witnessed, firsthand, the difference a strong lawyer can make in the lives of families who have been touched by tragedy. That is why I am blessed to have become a lawyer, and that is why I take pride in standing up for the rights of injured and mistreated Iowans.

I entered the working world as a restaurant server, and waited tables all through high school and college. Working as a young woman in that industry I experienced sexual harassment and wage theft. I know first-hand what it’s like to feel powerless at work. To me, “worker’s rights” means fair treatment, living wages, and workplaces free of harassment. I became a lawyer so that I could stand alongside clients who are fighting to get what they deserve from their employers, and to contribute to the movement for worker’s and labor rights.

When I went to law school, I knew from the start I wanted to go into litigation. I wanted to help people who needed an advocate in a tough situation. Today, I look forward to meeting new clients, each with their own unique problems to face and goals to achieve. I pride myself on keeping in close contact with my clients and clearing a path to the best result for their claim.

I have a strong desire to help others, particularly those overlooked and undervalued in our society. While attending law school and working as a law clerk, I became involved with Social Security Disability law. Ever since then, I have been an advocate for disabled individuals. It is very rewarding assisting individuals with the greatest need, helping them obtain benefits from the system they paid into throughout their careers.
